A High-Renewables Tomorrow, Today: Gaviotas, Colombia

The plains of eastern Colombia are a tough land—the haunt of drug trafficking, guerilla warfare, and paramilitary groups; a place where the soil is so poor everyone said nothing could grow. Paolo Lugari, the founder of the 200-person community of Gaviotas, believed otherwise. In the face of adversity, he built a thriving, self-sustaining community.

Sandy One Year Later

One year ago, Superstorm Sandy made landfall along the coast of New Jersey. This time last October, communities were under water, millions of East Coasters were without power, and the New York-New Jersey region weathered one of the toughest weather-related crises in anyone’s memory.

Our Boulder office recently welcomed Alexander MacDonald, Ph.D., chief science advisor for NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research and director of the Earth System Research Laboratory. MacDonald and his team presented their research on how weather patterns affect renewable generation—specifically wind and solar.
