Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are core to achieving RMI’s mission of transforming energy use. For more information about RMI’s approach to equity in our mission, see our Equity Principles.

Every single person is a stakeholder in the energy transition. We need the widest range of perspectives to understand the systems we are trying to change; a homogenous group cannot solve a problem as complex as the one we face. That doesn’t just mean bringing a diverse team to the table. It also means working proactively to give all RMIers an equitable experience, for example, by supporting our team with mentorship opportunities and ensuring that each of us feels welcomed. Beyond our internal practices, we are committed to integrating equity into our strategic and programmatic work to ensure that the energy transition benefits everyone.

We are continuously identifying where we can close gaps and improve outcomes throughout our employment practices and employee engagement. We work hard at strengthening a culture of inclusion and belonging. Some of our efforts include the following:

Hiring Process

We create diverse interview panels and provide interview trainings to help interviewers keep unconscious biases in check. We use scorecards with consistent criteria and evaluation forms to ensure candidates are being evaluated objectively.

Training

Our Learning and Development team offers a suite of DEI training for all staff.

Affinity Groups
  • DIVE-En – Open to all employees, DIVE En encourages organization-wide discussions on DEI topics, participates in diversity recruiting events, and shares information and resources.
  • Women’s Forum – Provides an opportunity for problem-solving and support around gender challenges in the workplace through facilitated discussions, skills-building sessions, and a speaker series.
  • BIPOC Caucus – Fosters a supportive community and culture for staff who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color).
  • LGBTQ+ Group – Fosters a supportive community and culture for staff who identify as LGBTQ+.
Equal by 30

Joining other public and private-sector organizations, RMI has signed on to the Equal by 30 campaign, making a public commitment to work toward equal pay, equal leadership, and equal opportunities for women in the clean energy sector by 2030.

We are on a journey—one where we are already making strides, but also fall short at times. One thing is certain—we are committed to truly having an inclusive culture where we can do our best and be ourselves at work. We want to learn from and effectively engage with one another and empower each other to grow. Our individual and collective contributions create the best teams and solutions to make the world better. We know there is much work to do, but we are up to the task. Join us and be a part of our transformation.

Reasonable Accommodations

RMI is committed to the inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, we will always ensure that people with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and/or to receive other benefits and privileges of employment, please contact our Talent Acquisition team (recruiting@rmi.org).
