The Opportunity of Energy Efficiency

Today’s energy system is incredibly inefficient ― wasting $4.5 trillion, or almost 5% of global GDP ― all before any value is created with energy. Energy efficiency reduces waste, costs, and pollution — and it's essential to meet climate goals.

Improving the efficiency of our energy system will mean replacing fossil fuel technologies with rapidly scaling renewable energy and electrification solutions, which are often two to four times more efficient. Delivering fully on the promise of energy efficiency means creating more efficient products, buildings, and factories, and broader systems — like cities, industrial hubs, and supply chains. This whole systems approach to energy efficiency, coupled with a rapid transition to renewable energy, puts our most important climate goals within reach and can make the energy transition faster, more affordable, more equitable, and more widely beneficial.

“We have a new energy crisis, and efficiency is the largest, cheapest, safest, cleanest, and fastest way to address it.”
