Accelerating a just and equitable energy transition in China

RMI focuses on finding technical and economic solutions to support China to decarbonize.

The China team collaborates with stakeholders, key experts, businesses, academia, and industry leaders to provide in-depth technical expertise and conduct impact-driven research. We leverage systematic approach and market-focused mechanisms to accelerate decarbonization in power, heavy industries, building, transportation, methane, and other key sectors.

China's efforts to advance the clean energy transition are essential for the world.

As the world's top carbon emitter, the world's largest investor in renewable energy, and the largest market for EVs, China is facing the most critical opportunity to deeply decarbonize its economy.

RMI China supports a clean and low-carbon transition of the power system in China, which includes supporting the construction of clean energy systems, promoting the implementation of a renewables-friendly power market mechanism, and empowering provinces and regions to develop tailored roadmaps for decarbonization.

RMI China advances the transition of China’s key industrial sectors — steel, cement, chemicals, and aluminum — through supply, demand, and ecosystem levers: scaling renewables, green hydrogen, and circularity on the supply side; enabling green premiums, low-carbon standards, demand aggregation, and innovative mechanisms on the demand side; and fostering collaborative commitment, focused forums, and in-depth engagement across the ecosystem. Our approach is market-driven and value-chain integrated — building a sustainable, prosperous industrial system.

RMI China drives road, shipping, and aviation clean energy transition by enhancing the cost-effectiveness of next-generation green energy and fuels (e.g., green hydrogen, green methanol, green ammonia, sustainable aviation fuels) and establishing market enablers. The team also identifies and incubates promising clean low-carbon technologies through in-depth analysis, while optimizing green and transition finance tools and utilization practices to enlarge investment resources for supporting the transition.

RMI China supports the transition of China’s buildings and critical infrastructure — including industrial parks, data centers,  batteries, and electric vehicles — toward clean, net-zero-ready development. The team’s work takes a full life-cycle approach, addressing both operations and materials, and integrates green energy and low-carbon materials through standards, data, procurement, and market-based solutions.

Fostering new models of rural and agricultural development that are powered by clean energy transition, climate-smart argi-food system transformation, carbon removal capacity enhancement, and youth climate leadership cultivation, all through market-based innovations that put equity at front and center.

RMI China supports target-setting and strategic guidance for methane and other non-CO₂ greenhouse gas mitigation; facilitates enabling policies and implementation pathways across the energy, agriculture, and waste sectors; and advances innovation and market-based mechanisms to scale solutions and accelerate the clean energy transition.
