trucks on highway

Zero-Emission Trucking in India Resources Hub

As India moves toward its net-zero targets, transitioning to zero-emission trucks (ZETs) is crucial, given the trucking sector’s outsized impact on air pollution and carbon emissions. Although diesel trucks make up just 3 percent of India’s vehicle fleet, they account for 53% of particulate matter emissions and one-third of transport-related CO₂ emissions. A committed shift to ZETs could deliver 2.8–3.8 gigatons of cumulative CO₂ savings by 2050. Additionally, with road freight consuming over 25% of annual oil imports, widespread ZET adoption could cut diesel consumption by 838 billion liters and save up to ₹116 lakh crore (US$1.5 trillion) in oil costs by 2050.

By curbing emissions and lowering fleet operating expenses, ZETs present both economic and environmental advantages, making them a strategic investment for a sustainable future.

RMI’s resources support the ZET ecosystem and accelerate adoption by identifying key barriers and identifying market enablers and solution pathways. Our work spans policy, financing, infrastructure deployment, and real-world demonstrations to drive the ZET transition.
