Abatement of Methane Emissions in the Oil & Gas Sector: Costs and Opportunities

Oil and gas systems are prone to leaks — large and small — and opportunities exist to “tighten the screws” to keep gas from escaping. This is a major climate opportunity because natural gas is composed primarily of methane, a potent and fast-acting greenhouse gas. Natural gas is also a valuable commodity that it pays not to leak. At London Climate Action Week 2026, the Harvard Methane Initiative, RMI, and SLB will host a panel to discuss engineering, policy, and economic opportunities to mitigate methane in the oil and gas sector. The Harvard Methane Initiative will provide an update to their oil and gas abatement cost project, with the most recent results from their ongoing original econometric analysis. RMI will showcase the OCI+ decision support tool that openly quantifies wide-ranging emissions and energy loss from equivalent barrels of oil and gas. SLB will share engineering innovations and new Methane Management and Decarbonization-Planning solutions, which they have developed to keep gas in the pipe and out of the air.
