As part of Climate Week NYC, Rocky Mountain Institute joined academics, activists, industry leaders, and others to bring our techno-economic expertise to address the greatest danger that faces the world today: climate change.
As this year’s event was virtual, RMI participated in a series of webinars to explore various decarbonization challenges. Managing Director James Newcomb, Senior Principal Thomas Koch Blank, Principal Taku Ide, and Manager Chathurika Gamage joined with other experts to discuss matters as varied as the role of digital platforms in climate action, tools to measure and mitigate methane emissions in oil and gas, and decarbonizing steelmaking and other industrial sectors.
A summary of the webinars RMI participated in and links to webinar recordings can be found below. In addition to these, RMI Managing Director Paul Bodnar will be speaking at an event next week on climate risks and resilience that is also connected to Climate Week.
Climate Intelligence for the Oil and Gas Industry and Beyond
Charting the path to deep decarbonization requires trusted climate data and analysis to accelerate action for greenhouse gas emissions reductions. RMI, Macquarie, Origin Energy, OXY Low Carbon, and Watson Institute at Brown University joined forces to explore how the new Climate Action Engine will make emissions visible and actionable. Panelists asserted that decarbonization cannot happen in a vacuum—oil and gas operators, financial institutions, service providers, and civil society must collaborate to accelerate the energy transition.
The Role of Digital Platforms in Addressing the Climate Crisis
Featuring innovative panelists from Browning Environmental Communications, United Nations Development Programme, and We Don’t Have Time, the panel explored how digital platforms can be a powerful tool to chart our collective future toward a 1.5°C aligned path. Our panelists emphasized that climate organizations on digital platforms should balance raising awareness of climate impacts with trusted data and storytelling while also driving engagement toward solution-oriented approaches.
Redesigning Industry
Our Redesigning Industry webinar on industrial emissions was session six in a year-long series on the Seven Challenges for Energy Transformation. It addressed how cement and steel sectors can transition successfully at scale in the decisive decade. Experts from LafargeHolcim, HYBRIT, and ClimateWorks discussed the analytics, technologies and market disruptors being leveraged to decarbonize their industries.
