Kraken, Recurve, Voltus Join RMI’s Virtual Power Plant Partnership
VP3 welcomes new companies in the virtual power plant space as partnership continues to produce leading industry insights.
Boulder, CO – August 15, 2024
RMI, a leading nonprofit dedicated to the energy transition, announced the expansion of the Virtual Power Plant Partnership (VP3). Kraken, Recurve, and Voltus, three energy service providers working in the virtual power plant (VPP) space, have joined VP3, an initiative aimed at catalyzing the market for virtual power plants.
“In VP3’s second year, we’ve leveraged the perspectives of our growing membership to engage in key conversations around how VPPs can help shape the energy transition,” said electricity expert Lauren Shwisberg, RMI principal. “We’re excited to welcome Kraken, Recurve, and Voltus, three companies at the cutting edge of VPP technology, to lend their voices as we continue our work to catalyze and scale this market.”
VP3 launched in January of 2023. In recent months, the partnership has published fresh insights, including The Virtual Power Plant Flipbook, which catalogs utility VPP deployments and best practices, and Meeting Summer Peaks, a white paper on the increasing need for VPPs as a reliability solution for the power sector.
Statements from New Members
“We believe that scaling consumer flexibility is integral to unlocking the true benefits of the energy transition and are delighted to contribute our expertise to VP3’s mission.”
— Devrim Celal, CEO – Asset & Optimization at Kraken
“Demand flexibility is a proven resource that can be deployed rapidly, cost-effectively, and with more precision than new generation. We have consistently seen that with the right analytics, virtual power plants can be designed, implemented, and measured for maximum impact. We are excited to contribute to VP3 to drive awareness and adoption of these important technologies.”
— Zach Robin, CEO of Recurve
“The onset of yet another scorching summer season— amid a period of historic load growth, no less — is a stark reminder that the power and utilities sector has their work cut out for them. And we’re committed to the VP3 community’s mission. Working together, we’ll equip grid operators and regulators with the resources, guidance, and confidence they need to take necessary action toward the more flexible, affordable, and sustainable grid we all need.”
— Dana Guernsey, Co-Founder and CEO of Voltus
About VP3
VP3 is an RMI initiative working to scale virtual power plants (VPPs). VPPs are portfolios comprised of hundreds or thousands of households and businesses that offer the latent potential of their electric vehicles, smart thermostats, appliances, batteries, solar arrays, and additional energy assets to support the grid.
VP3 members span the automotive, building, energy service, software, and other sectors. With the guidance and support of its members, VP3 is working toward a future where businesses, households, and communities are empowered through VPPs, supporting cost-effective energy, emissions reductions, and a more resilient electricity grid.
To achieve this, VP3 works to:
- Catalog, research, and communicate VPP benefits
- Develop industry-wide best practices and roadmaps
- Inform and shape policy development by engaging regulators and utilities
