Film and TV Industry Roadmap Charts the Path to Cleaner, Quieter, and More Reliable On-Set Power

RMI and Third Derivative release a new roadmap to accelerate the transition to clean mobile power across film and TV productions

Boulder, CO — December 9, 2025 — RMI and its global climate tech accelerator Third Derivative today released a new report, Charting the Path to Clean-Powered Productions: A Decarbonization Roadmap for Film and TV, providing a practical path for the entertainment industry to transition to clean, reliable, and cost-competitive mobile power solutions.

Developed as part of the Clean Mobile Power Initiative — a collaboration founded by Netflix and The Walt Disney Company, with support from RMI and Third Derivative — the roadmap identifies actionable strategies for scaling clean mobile power solutions that meet the unique size, mobility, and reliability needs of film and TV productions.

The roadmap builds on the insights of the Clean Mobile Power Initiative, which launched in 2023 to help studios, suppliers, and production crews replace fossil fuel-based power with clean alternatives such as battery energy storage systems (BESS), hydrogen power units (HPUs), and hybrid systems. These clean mobile power solutions can significantly reduce air pollution and noise, improve health and working conditions, and offer smoother operations through reduced maintenance and downtime — all while maintaining flexibility, reliability, and creative freedom on set.

“The Clean Mobile Power Initiative shows what’s possible when creative industries and climate innovators come together,” said Dr. Emma Stewart, Sustainability Officer at Netflix. “Our partnership with RMI and Third Derivative is helping modernize the production landscape so that clean, quiet, and reliable power becomes the standard—not the exception.”

“This initiative represents a pivotal opportunity for the entertainment industry to help scale innovative clean power technologies,” said Yalmaz Siddiqui, Vice President, Environmental Sustainability, The Walt Disney Company. “Cleaner, quieter, and more efficient power supports our sustainability goals while improving conditions for crews and communities alike.”

“The Clean Mobile Power Initiative is helping position the entertainment industry as a proving ground for innovation,” said Jon Creyts, CEO of RMI. “By pairing leading studios with cleantech innovators, we are accelerating solutions that can transform energy for production and ultimately reshape mobile energy use far beyond Hollywood.”

Achieving the initiative’s goals will not only reduce emissions but also deliver tangible on-set and community benefits. Clean mobile power systems decrease local air pollutants that contribute to poor air quality and health risks, creating safer, more comfortable working environments. Battery energy storage systems and hydrogen power units are often quieter, allowing for greater creative flexibility and faster setup times while minimizing neighborhood noise impacts during location filming. These systems can also lower long-term operational costs by reducing fuel use and maintenance needs.

To accelerate technology development and adoption, Third Derivative assembled and supported the Clean Mobile Power Cohort, a group of 10 innovative companies advancing scalable, cost-competitive clean mobile power solutions for the entertainment sector. The cohort provided startups with mentorship from industry experts, pilot opportunities with studios and suppliers, and connections to investors to help scale production-ready systems.

While the roadmap is tailored to the entertainment industry, its findings have relevance for other sectors that depend on mobile power, including live events, sports production, and construction. By uniting entertainment leaders and clean energy innovators, the Clean Mobile Power Initiative offers a replicable model for industries seeking to cut emissions, improve performance, and advance a healthier, more sustainable future for workers and communities alike.

The Clean Mobile Power Roadmap outlines the key findings, technology opportunities, and collaborative strategies identified through the initiative and serves as a guide for studios, suppliers, and production teams seeking to reduce diesel use and emissions across productions.
