We are working to scale successful blueprints for mobility transformation by replicating lessons learned in Austin in other cities around the world, and by convening stakeholders to develop industry-wide standards for data that can be applied universally.

Why It Matters

With car ownership expected to peak as soon as 2020, it is clear that our mobility future is rapidly shifting, changing how we get from point A to point B. It is a critical time for cities to research and pilot new transportation options so that urban centers remain not just vibrant and competitive, but safe, clean, and healthy as well.

Who’s Involved

The City of Denver is our lead scaling partner—we are working in the greater Denver metropolitan area to both learn and scale solutions with the City of Austin and other U.S. cities.

What We’re Doing

Interoperable Transit Data (ITD) Consortium: We are working with the World Bank and a consortium of industry stakeholders to standardize data to enable travelers to easily discover, utilize, and pay for transportation services and for planners to manage and understand a multimodal transportation network.

New Mobility Services Pilots: We are piloting new business models and methods to help people move around while helping to stimulate local economies.

T4A Transportation Collaborative: We are a member of a collection of 18 ambitions U.S. cities working together on half a dozen critical project areas including shared mobility services, electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, data/analytics, and metrics/measurements.

New Mobility in China: We are working with the RMI China team to inform new mobility policy and catalyze pilot programs in Beijing and, eventually, other cities throughout China.

Thought Leadership: We are collaborating with global thought leaders in the new mobility space including NACTO, Shared Use Mobility Center, Susan Shaheen, Larry Burns, Robin Chase, UC Davis, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Stanford, MIT, Robin Chase, and others.

WHAT WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED

GTFS Best Practices Working Group
We convened and facilitated the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) Working Group, comprised of 17 organizations involved in GTFS, including app providers and data consumers, transit providers, and consultants. The working group shares best practices, which allows stakeholders to coordinate efforts, improve customer experience in transportation apps, and make it easier for software developers to deploy and scale applications, products, and services.

Boulder d2d pilot
The Door to Downtown (d2d) pilot program in Boulder, Colorado gave riders going to downtown Boulder $5 off a ride with their preferred rideshare partner—Lyft, Uber, or zTrip. Return rides home were discounted with a minimum purchase from a participating merchant. This gave downtown Boulder customers a chance to experience the future of personal mobility while testing a new approach to moving people through the city. It also boosted business for downtown retailers. The d2d pilot offered a unique opportunity to test the demand for new transportation options when they are essentially the same price as driving and parking. For the first time, we could test the price elasticity of demand for mobility services.

India Mobility
We supported the RMI India team on a vision and action plan to take the country to 100 percent EV’s by 2030 through a charrette workshop with 60 high-ranking government and business leaders to lay out actionable steps to realize this pioneering ambition for India.
