Webinar: Realizing India’s Battery Manufacturing Aspiration

Building a robust market for domestically manufactured batteries

India’s expected demand for batteries across different use cases can enable economies of scale and support our ambitious targets for 450 gigawatts of installed renewables and an accelerated transition to electric mobility. However, international players have taken the lead globally and India has a limited market share in advanced battery manufacturing. A mature domestic battery production ecosystem needs to be created to gain competitive advantage and contribute to India’s energy security goals.

Meeting this goal requires a combination of demand- and supply-side measures. The Union Cabinet approved the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for 10 sectors in 2020, with an outlay of ₹18,100 crore (US$2.45 billion)for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery manufacturing. This scheme aims to provide incentives on incremental sales of products manufactured domestically and encourages setting up manufacturing units in India. It is crucial to make this manufacturing scheme a success in order to ensure adequate market development in key sectors such as electric vehicles and stationary storage. These sectors will act as driving agents to create demand for batteries from 2025 onwards.

In light of recent developments such as the approval of the PLI scheme and the role of energy storage technology in boosting the clean energy transition, NITI Aayog, RMI India and Rocky Mountain Institute hosted a webinar on December 15, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. IST. The webinar focused on the future of ACC battery supply as well as demand, both globally and in India. This was followed by a panel discussion on creating a market for the sector.
