Powering secure and competitive clean growth in Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia’s electricity system is still fossil dependent and faces rising demand
RMI works to turn rapid growth into a clean, resilient, and competitive advantage
by supporting Southeast Asia in shifting toward clean, resilient sectors that support long-term competitiveness and economic growth.
35%
of global energy demand growth will come from the region over the decade to 2035
77%
of Southeast Asia’s climate pollution is linked to energy systems, industrial processes, and land use.
80%
of the region's energy supply comes from fossil fuels
Program Initiatives
In partnership with PLN and the Government of Indonesia, RMI supports the development of cost-effective, cleaner energy systems. This work includes techno-economic analysis to accelerate coal-to-clean transitions in accordance with Indonesia’s G20 commitments and national targets.
RMI also participates in Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) Technical Working Group, leading work on the managed coal phaseout as part JETP’s Comprehensive Investment and Policy Plan (CIPP).
In addition, RMI supported the JETP Secretariat in developing Indonesia’s first database of captive power plants, covering more than 500 facilities. RMI conducted plant-level analysis of 10 pipeline plants (12 GW), focusing on the techno-economic pathways for their transition.
RMI collaborated with United in Diversity Foundation (UID) to create HEAL in 2026 as a shared learning platform for capacity development, bringing together ~40 leaders involved in the energy transition over a four-month period. The fellowship implements the solutions critical to achieving the vision outlined in Indonesia’s net-zero ambition and nationally determined contribution (NDC) commitment, through the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and other energy transition platforms.
RMI supports the government of the Philippines by working with the private sector to help achieve the country’s goal of 35% renewable energy by 2030.
RMI developed Transforming Indonesia’s Transportation report and conducted convening event, inviting >70 stakeholders from various groups to discuss 4 approaches (policy, finance, charging infrastructure and corporate/consumer engagement), moving the ecosystem to accelerate the adoption of E2W in Indonesia.
