Scaling Clean Energy

Heavy Industry

Advancing smarter, more efficient industrial systems at scale

RMI partners with heavy industry to unlock efficiency, innovation, and competitive advantage

Seven industries — aluminum, cement and concrete, steel, chemicals, aviation, shipping, and trucking — are responsible for roughly 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions. To help these essential sectors operate more efficiently and remain competitive in a rapidly changing landscape, RMI generates market insights and creates enabling environments that support project developers, policymakers, financial institutions, and communities in deploying smarter, more resilient industrial systems at scale.

Transforming the most energy-intensive sectors requires a mix of innovative approaches.

RMI engages with the private and public sectors to kick-start first-of-a-kind industrial projects, working with ambitious companies to make sure they’re operational by 2050.

Industry Initiatives

RMI is accelerating the growth a net-zero concrete industry via demand creation, technical innovation, streamlining policy, supply-side support, and unlocking capital for first-of-a-kind projects.

Transforming oil and natural gas into plastics, and chemicals is highly emissions intensive. RMI works with industry to reduce the climate and health risks of plastics and chemicals, from production to the end of a product’s life.

Decarbonizing aluminum production requires innovation in primary production, decarbonizing electricity supply, and improving end-of-life scrap collection and sorting. RMI’s emissions reporting guidance provides key metrics to accelerate decarbonization.

Steelmakers can achieve deep decarbonization with technology solutions available today. Emerging innovations can help the industry break ties with coal to cut air pollution, lower climate emissions, and benefit nearby communities.

RMI works with airlines, manufacturers, and others to cut aviation emissions by spurring adoption of sustainable fuels. We’re also working to avoid contrails, a major contributor to planetary warming.

The marine shipping industry, which handles most global trade, must transition to zero-emission fuels and vessels within the next decade To achieve its goal: net zero by 2050.

Electrifying freight transport, especially medium- and heavy-duty trucks, can significantly reduce emissions, improve public health and air quality, and help fleets save money.

When produced cleanly by using renewable energy, hydrogen can be a powerful decarbonization tool to replace fossil fuels in heavy industry and long-haul transport.

RMI’s Commodity Market Transformation Initiative accelerates market transformation in emissions-intensive commodity sectors by building transparency, trust, and aligned incentives.

RMI works with heavy industry leaders and innovators to accelerate technologies that reduce emissions across energy-intensive sectors such as steel, chemicals, and manufacturing.

Through the Mission Possible Partnership (MPP), RMI is accelerating development of US clean industrial hubs. MPP facilitates information sharing, spotlights first movers, and helps projects maximize emissions reductions and community benefits.
