We convene key stakeholders to establish a national energy vision, and develop a transition strategy to achieve that vision.
Islands Energy Program
We aim to accelerate the transition to renewables in 13 island Caribbean countries, install 95 megawatts of renewable energy, and leverage $300 million in financing for island energy projects by 2020.
A Transition to Renewable Energy
Learn how our Islands Energy Program is helping island economies transition from expensive and dirty energy sources to clean, affordable renewable energy.
What Is the Islands Energy Program?
We accelerate the transition of island economies from a heavy dependence on fossil fuels to a mix of energy efficiency and renewables—and create a blueprint for other isolated economies. By unlocking the unique challenges islands face, we are supporting islands to move beyond clean-energy roadmaps to tangible, on-the-ground results.
Why It Matters
The residents of island nations pay some of the highest electricity prices in the world because of their near-total dependence on imported diesel—perpetuating poverty and inequality, swelling national debts, hampering investments, and blocking sustainable development. Additionally, diesel generation releases carbon dioxide and particulate emissions, reducing air quality and harming the health of local residents.
What We’re Doing
We develop, de-risk, and prepare clean energy projects for market in order to attract top project developers and companies.
We provide island energy practitioners with direct access to subject matter experts, and with a mechanism to exchange lessons and learn from each other.
WHAT WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED
Facilitated the implementation of 26 projects totaling over 140 MW spread across 13 island countries that are either under construction, under procurement, or plan to be tendered. Led the clean energy transition planning process for four island nations and one island province. Developed roadmaps for Aruba, San Andrés and Providencia, and Saint Lucia to build low-carbon futures. Helped draft The Bahamas renewable energy net-billing and interconnection policy. Helped draft the Montserrat National Energy Policy. Launched an online learning community for island energy practitioners.
