Access to affordable financing remains one of the key challenges to scaling electric buses and trucks in India. In May 2026, reports indicated that the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) was considering a USD 1 billion scheme to support privately operated electric buses and trucks through measures such as interest subventions and loan guarantees. The proposal has sparked discussion across industry, financial institutions, government, and civil society about how these mechanisms could be designed and what additional policies may be needed to support their success.

This session examined the rationale behind the proposal, key design considerations, and the broader policy and market conditions needed to enable investment in electric commercial vehicles. It also featured a panel discussion with representatives from the finance sector and government, who shared perspectives on financing approaches, implementation challenges, and opportunities to strengthen the enabling environment for electric buses and trucks.
