Massachusetts Carbon Dioxide Removal Study: Public Comment

Massachusetts is working aggressively to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and recognizes the role carbon dioxide removal (CDR) will need to play in achieving this target. To help the state better understand the potential for CDR, the Massachusetts Legislature has directed the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) to develop a study of CDR opportunities within the state, and RMI has been contracted to perform the study.

RMI has completed a draft of the study and is seeking public comment to further inform the final report. In this webinar, we explained the contents of the study, presented preliminary findings, and encouraged stakeholders to engage through the public comment process.

About the study:

In accordance with Section 111 of the Session Law – Acts of 2024, Chapter 239, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) in partnership with the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), is undertaking a comprehensive study to evaluate the prospects and opportunities for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) innovation and operations within the Commonwealth and its adjacent marine territories (not more than 50 nautical miles off the commonwealth). This “CDR study” has been commissioned to address the urgent need to scale durable and verifiable climate solutions that meaningfully contribute to net zero ambitions and position Massachusetts as a potential leader in the emerging CDR sector.
