About the Program

Artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities across the energy sector — from improving everyday workflows and decision-making to supporting applications in grid planning, operations, renewable energy integration, and distributed energy resources.

RMI’s AI Training for Utilities is a three-session virtual learning series designed to help utility professionals explore where AI can realistically add value to their work and build practical skills to apply it. The program brings together professionals across Africa and the Caribbean to explore real utility applications and learn across different organizational and regional contexts.

The program has been shaped by input from utility professionals through RMI’s needs assessment and is being developed collaboratively by RMI’s Global South Program and AI & Energy Lab.

What You’ll Gain

Through hands-on activities, real-world examples, and peer learning, participants will:

  • Understand where and how AI can add value to utility work
  • Apply AI to real workflows and challenges from their day-to-day work
  • Learn from peers across utilities and regions and explore how others are applying AI in practice
  • Explore pathways from experimentation to organizational adoption, including what it takes to move promising AI applications forward

No advanced AI expertise is required. The program is designed for participants with a range of experience using AI.

9:00–10:30 AM EST | 3:00–4:30 PM WAT

Explore organizational readiness, barriers and enablers, and identify realistic next steps for advancing promising AI applications within your organization.

What to Expect

This is an interactive learning series rather than a traditional webinar. Participants will bring real challenges from their work, experiment with AI tools, exchange experiences with peers, and apply their learning between sessions.

Participants are encouraged to join all three sessions to benefit from the full learning journey and build relationships with the cohort.

Who Should Participate?

The program is designed primarily for professionals working at electric utilities across Africa and the Caribbean who are interested in exploring practical applications of AI.

Participants may work across functions such as planning, operations, engineering, renewable energy and DER integration, asset management, customer and commercial services, and data and digital teams.

Professionals working closely with utilities may also be considered where their experience is directly relevant to the cohort.
