Don’t Miss RMI on 60 Minutes This Sunday!
Learn more about RMI’s work in the Caribbean
We have exciting news! On Sunday March 1 at 7 p.m. ET/PT, 6 p.m. CT/MT, you can watch Rocky Mountain Institute on CBS’ 60 Minutes. Justin Locke and Chris Burgess from the Islands Energy Program will be featured with partners from Bahamas Power and Light and the Government of The Bahamas discussing the power of distributed renewable energy to build a more resilient future for the islands and set an example for the world grappling with climate change.
When Hurricane Dorian hit in September, it devastated the islands, knocked out power, and cut people off from critical facilities and services like hospitals or fresh water. This catastrophe and Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 reveal how vulnerable Caribbean countries are to power disruption. Nowhere is this more evident than in their electricity grids, which are centralized and predominantly powered by fossil fuels. But coordinated action in the Caribbean is helping these nations flip the script from being the victims of climate change to global leaders in resilient, renewable solutions.
This program comes just after we released Solar Under Storm Part II, which looks at how roof mounted solar photovoltaic systems can be designed to survive Category Five hurricanes, and what resilience and cost benefits they provide.
We can’t wait to show you examples of this on the ground this Sunday.
