Reconsidering Planned Generation

Jump to Section

The rapidly evolving global energy landscape presents a tremendous opportunity to review — and rethink — planned power sector investments. Changes in demand, new technology costs, and grid needs have fundamentally shifted which investments are technically viable and economically efficient. For power sector leaders charged with delivering affordable, reliable, and secure power that strengthens their countries’ economic competitiveness, getting these investments right in this moment will have implications on their countries for decades.

RMI’s work on Reconsidering Planned Generation offers power sector leaders a framework to identify planned investments (particularly coal plants) that may be worth a second look and outlines next steps to assess alternatives to those plants in greater detail.

In subsequent briefs, RMI will share illustrative analyses into the viability of transitioning specific plants and explore regulatory strategies to support implementations.
