According to the latest US government inventory, solar will account for 39 percent of the electric generation capacity added in 2021, and wind will constitute a further 31 percent. With current technology costs and policy incentives, renewables are now unquestionably the cheapest generation assets to build and operate.

Prior to joining RMI, Russell was the Campaign Director of the youth-led environmental nonprofit Earth Guardians. He contributed to two books, We Rise: The Earth Guardians Guide to Building a Movement That Restores the Planet and Imaginary Borders, both authored by Xiuhtezcatl Martinez. His reporting from COP21 in Paris was recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists for excellence in environment enterprise reporting.
