2014 TEAMS
From March 31 to April 3, 2014, twelve teams from ten U.S. states convened at Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash, CO. Teams were oriented around one of three themes:
- New Business Models: New utility business models, pricing structures and regulations
- Energy Innovation Districts: For example, net zero communities, demonstration projects, and microgrids
- Clean Energy Pathways: Implementation and design strategies to enable high renewable and distributed resource goals

Developed innovative utility business models to integrate high levels of renewable energy resources onto the grid.
Created a business plan and technical design criteria for a potential ASU microgrid.
Developed a clean energy vision and action plan for a "smart city" university district.
Developed a clean energy vision and action plan for a "smart city" university district.
Created new utility business models integrating distributed energy technologies in the context of a deregulated electricity market.
Developed new pricing strategies in San Diego Gas & Electric’s territory.
Established clean energy investment options from voter-allocated municipal tax revenues from the utility franchise fee.
Explored Boulder’s energy future vision and what municipal rate structures and business models could enable that vision.
Developed a clean energy strategy for the 17-campus UNC system, defining the key resources and enablers needed.
Developed a plan, building off of initial scoping work, to build a framework for Minnesota’s energy future and reduce or eliminate its dependence on fossil fuels.
With NREL, developed a program plan to transform underserved, affordable neighborhoods into zero energy districts.
