RMI is focused on accelerating the deployment of efficiency, electrification, renewable energy, storage, and grid enhancements because we believe these technologies will form the backbone of a modern, secure, affordable, and resilient energy system. They are already the fastest-growing and, in many cases, the lowest-cost energy solutions available today.

At the same time, we recognize that these solutions alone will not fully meet the needs of every region or industrial application, given differences in resource availability, land constraints, energy security priorities, reliability requirements, and local economics.

For that reason, we believe continued innovation across a range of “clean firm” and other advanced energy technologies remains important. These include geothermal, hydropower, nuclear fission and fusion, tidal and oceanic, various forms of carbon-capture and storage, and other developments.

RMI’s analysis continues to indicate that new nuclear power faces significant economic and deployment challenges relative to other commercially available alternatives. Where new nuclear capacity is pursued, it is likely to be driven primarily by factors beyond pure cost competitiveness, including energy security, industrial policy, long-term reliability, and strategic national priorities.

RMI supports pragmatic, market-driven approaches to building energy systems that are affordable, resilient, secure, and capable of meeting the diverse needs of different regions and economies. While our philosophy is technology-neutral, our decades of expertise in efficiency and renewables mean we understand their deployment best.

We are constantly supplementing this knowledge through ongoing research and partnerships with institutions in other areas to ensure our work adequately reflects the state of the art and future innovation in energy systems design and implementation.
