Plastics
Enhancing product-level traceability to drive plastic emissions reductions
The transformation of crude oil and natural gas into intermediate chemical products is an often-overlooked emissions-intensive segment of the oil and gas value chain. While increased use of electric vehicles for transportation will help reduce demand for diesel and gasoline, the clean energy transition will still require plastics, carbon fiber, and machine lubricants derived from petrochemical manufacturing.
Horizon Zero aims to reduce total oil and gas supply chain emissions by distinguishing emissions intensity of virgin plastic and recycling types, reporting on the percent content of recycled material, and encouraging the use of renewable electricity.
