Rocky Mountain Institute Expands Capabilities with Corporate Renewable Energy Expert, Miranda Ballentine

Former Assistant Secretary in Energy for the U.S. Air Force named as Managing Director to lead on organization’s work to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy by corporate buyers.

Boulder, CO, August 24, 2017 — Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) is pleased to announce the addition of Miranda Ballentine to the organization’s team as a Managing Director. Miranda will be drawing from her extensive experience in corporate and government energy policy and strategy to lead RMI’s Business Renewables Center (BRC), a leading RMI program helping corporations buy renewable energy.

“Miranda has provided energy, climate change, and sustainability strategies to Fortune 500 corporations, institutional investors, and environmental groups; all of which is invaluable experience that will bolster RMI’s programs and range of expertise” said RMI CEO Jules Kortenhorst. “Miranda brings with her great management strength and a deep passion for the energy transition. We are excited to be strengthening our team through Miranda’s leadership that aligns with RMI’s mission of accelerating and scaling climate solutions.”

Miranda has a strong track record of intrapreneurship in the corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors, and across multiple fields, including energy, sustainability, construction and facilities, finance, and retail. She brings two decades’ experience leading high-performing, global and community-based teams, both vertically and in matrixed environments.

Prior to joining RMI, Miranda served President Obama as Assistant Secretary of the Air Force (Installations, Environment, and Energy), where she was responsible for a $9 billion annual energy budget and environmental programs for 9 million acres of land, 200 miles of coastline, 600,000 acres of forestland, and 270,000 acres of wetlands. She also was Director of Sustainability for Global Renewable Energy & Sustainable Facilities at Walmart Stores, Inc, where she led 60+ colleagues from fifteen countries to develop strategies toward Walmart’s goal to be supplied by 100% renewable energy. These programs identified over $1 billion in potential annual energy savings and 9 million metric tons of avoided GHG potential.

“Rocky Mountain Institute is the only think-tank exclusively focused on advanced energy’s role in national security, economic prosperity, and solving climate change–topics to which I have devoted my career,” Miranda says. “After leading renewable energy strategy for two of the world’s largest energy consumers–Walmart and the U.S. Air Force–I am thrilled to join RMI as we reinvent fire.”
