Accelerating the transition of island economies from a heavy dependence on fossil fuels to clean energy and energy efficiency.
Empowering Clean Economies
Helping people in emerging economies to leapfrog straight to the clean energy revolution.
What Is the Empowering Clean Economies Program?
The Empowering Clean Economies Program (ECE) takes a holistic, country-led approach to energy transition planning and implementation across numerous sectors. It contributes to interwoven positive economic, social, and environmental impact, while supporting existing national and global energy access targets and increasing resilience to climate change. The team works at the invitation of governments, utilities, and other key stakeholders across a wide range of geographic contexts in Africa, the Caribbean, and, increasingly, Southeast Asia. Each country has unique local characteristics, but the adoption of proven approaches and toolsets and the application of RMI's expertise have already proven to help fast-track clean energy adoption in low- and middle-income economies across sub-Saharan Africa and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Why It Matters
Low- and middle-income countries can meet their national energy plan goals and provide reliable and affordable energy access to their communities—and support their health and enhance their livelihoods— embracing and maximizing the contribution of clean energy solutions.
What We’re Doing
Within the Empowering Clean Economies Program, current focus areas include:
Working with partners in sub-Saharan Africa to increase access to energy and to support economic development at the household and community levels.
Addressing the technical, economic and regulatory barriers preventing clean energy transition in Southeast Asia.
