The time for investment in renewables in the Global South is now. After years of piloting and demonstration projects, the investment and economic underpinnings of the energy transition have turned in favor of renewable energy. The Global South is positioned to lead on the energy transition, with 61 percent of Global South countries having crossed the “renewables tipping point” and 17 percent overtaking the Global North.
Just as the SEforAll Forum will focus on “Sustainable Energy for Equity, Security, and Prosperity,” RMI’s work across the Global South in the Caribbean, Africa, and Southeast Asia highlights benefits that extend beyond climate and emissions, such as pathways to economic growth and job creation, clean tech for economic development, equitable energy access, and societal and structural resilience.
